After the COVID-19 pandemic paused the hockey season and postponed that possibility, Lafreniere was supposed to find out Friday night where he'd be going when the league held its draft lottery. Instead, he'll have to wait.

Chaos reigned at the NHL draft lottery, with the No. 1 pick still up for grabs in a second lottery drawing among the eight teams that lose in the qualifying round of the playoffs -- if play resumes.

Sabres Fire Jason Notterill, Name Kevyn Adams New GM

Jun 20, 2020 1:31 AM

The Buffalo Sabres fired general manager Jason Botterill on Tuesday.

The move comes less than a month after ownership publicly supported Botterill.

"He's our GM. Our plan is to continue with him," team president and co-owner Kim Pegula told the Associated Press in May. "I realize maybe it's not popular with the fans, but we have to do the things that we feel are right. We have a little bit more information than maybe a fan does, some inner workings that we see some positives in."

Kevyn Adams, the team's senior VP of business administration, was named general manager.

Bettman: NHL's Return To Play Maintains Integrity

Jun 16, 2020 12:56 PM

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman promises this summer's unconventional tournament "won't be too gimmicky," as the league balances safety concerns with creating a good television product and maintaining the integrity of the Stanley Cup.

"I think everybody can feel good, based on the combination of the play-in round and the way we're going to run the playoffs, that this will be a full competition which will bring out the best in our teams and our players," Bettman told ESPN's Mike Greenberg on Monday. "The Stanley Cup champion will be deserving of that crown and the most storied trophy in all of sports."
